  Dear Match Book,

  I am a member of an English-speaking book club based in Barcelona. For more than 15 years, we have been meeting over good food and wine to talk about an eclectic selection of books — fiction and nonfiction, classics and best sellers, some prizewinners and some not — all randomly chosen with no real criteria.

  Some titles that have inspired lots of discussion and were generally enjoyed by all include “Infidel,” by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, “Life After Life,” by Kate Atkinson, “The Crimson Petal and the White,” by Michel Faber, “Americanah,” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, “My Brilliant Friend,” by Elena Ferrante, and “The Kite Runner,” by Khaled Hosseini. Others, though, have sparked more mixed, though still lively, reactions, such as “Cloudstreet,” by Tim Winton, “Freedom,” by Jonathan Franzen, “The Gathering,” by Anne Enright, and “The Lacuna,” by Barbara Kingsolver.

  We were intrigued by the Match Book column “Works of Fiction That Are Best Read Together,” and have decided to take its advice, but with two novels instead of short stories. For our next book club we have chosen “The House of Mirth,” by Edith Wharton, and we are now looking for a more contemporary novel that would be a good accompaniment.

  Dear Doris,

  I don’t share Henry James’s famously undermining opinion, which he slipped into a letter to Wharton, that her 1905 novel is “better written than composed.” In the same missive, however, James also complimented his friend on her portrayal of the book’s heroine, the charming social climber Lily Bart, as “very big and true.” You can follow any number of thematic paths out from “The House of Mirth” — money, freedom, confinement, marriage, beauty, among others — to arrive at a compelling companion novel for your book group, but while looking for books to pair with the Wharton I also made sure to seek out protagonists who match James’s favorable assessment of Lily Bart.

  House Remodel

  The most literal choice for your book group would be Yvonne Georgina Puig’s “A Wife of Noble Character,” a smart and diverting modern homage to “The House of Mirth” set in 21st-century Houston. The parallels and disparities between the novels would offer plenty of comparison points for your analysis.

  Bright Lights, Big City

  For an even richer conversation, turn to “Passing,” by Nella Larsen. The 1929 novel about race and identity, set mainly in Harlem, takes place about three decades after “The House of Mirth,” but the affinities and distinctions between the two make for an irresistible combination. The two social novels share not only concerns about money and society, but also withering appraisals of appearances (Larsen’s protagonist observes with cool equanimity that her friend “looked as if her husband might be a butcher”), and similarly shattering endings.

  A contemporary New York novel set almost 20 years ago, “My Year of Rest and Relaxation,” by Ottessa Moshfegh, would make a slightly skew but provocative companion read. The novel’s pretty, unnamed narrator is (like Lily) an orphan, though she does have an inheritance to financially sustain her during a yearlong, pharmaceutically induced retreat from the world and from her own consciousness — with echoes of Lily’s own gradual dependence on a medicinal sleep aid. Moshfegh’s narrator’s waking moments, though, are filled with bitterly funny observations — of contemporary art and celebrities — whose tone would not seem out of place in Ms. Bart’s upper-crust milieu.

  Skin, Deep

  Finally, consider three novels about desire, beauty and ruin.

  In Jennifer Egan’s complex satire “Look at Me,” a New York model with an unrecognizably reconstructed face participates in a web-series re-enactment of her life. Part of the reality drama’s tonal inspiration? The Gilded Age novelist herself: “Yes! Wharton is perfect. ‘Age of Innocence.’ ‘ House of Mirth,’” the show’s producer exclaims during a story meeting.

  A darker story unfolds in Mary Gaitskill’s bracing second novel, “Veronica,” in which the friendship between Alison, a model, and her exuberant, titular officemate is as peculiar and significant as the bond between Wharton’s Gerty Farish, who “likes being good,” and Lily, who likes “being happy.”

  Like Gaitskill’s protagonist, the narrator of Merritt Tierce’s merciless debut, “Love Me Back,” a waitress and single mother in Texas named Marie, also has an appetite for self-destruction. And like Lily, Marie too trades on men’s desires — and her own — to eke out gratification from fleeting pleasures, as a distraction from the grim reality of poverty. Marie is a commanding figure in a small world and Tierce’s depiction of her is big and true.
